Kidzmix Programs

The Kidzmix philosophy is that the key to helping children develop social and emotional competence, is working with the whole family – kids and parents – and grandparents too for that matter.  Just as it ‘takes a village to raise a child’, so it is also with social and emotional skills, where all family members play their part as coaches.

Big Kidzmix – School Years 5 to 7

Big Kidzmix is a 9 hour group program for a maximum of 6 children who are attending School Years 5 to 7.

Little Kidzmix – School Years 3 & 4

Little Kidzmix is a 9 hour group program for a maximum of 6 children who are currently enrolled in School Years 3 and 4.

A 1 hr pre-program workshop for parents and child is held prior to the commencement of the first group session for both Big and Little Kidzmix.  This is in order to set goals for the program and to enable parent and child to work collaboratively together during the program.

Suitability for the Program

An initial consultation with the child assesses their suitability for the program, explores  their current social and emotional progress and identifies particular skills for development.  For successful participation in the program enrollees need to have age appropriate language and comprehension skills and their behaviour also needs to be co-operative in a new environment with new people. The program is not suitable for children with a conduct or behavioural difficulty, although these issues are suitable for family based work which Helen Davidson also provides.

We often receive enquiries about whether the program is suitable for children who have a developmental diagnosis – particularly those on the autism spectrum.  Our response is that the program involves a lot of talking and interacting, plus reading and writing and as it is time-limited, it may not be the most helpful teaching method.  However, this can be further discussed at the initial consultation.

Parents Seminars and Workshops

Kidzmix recognizes the leading role that parents play in developing their child’s social and emotional skills, and we also recognize that it’s not easy to find helpful and pratical information about ways that parents can assist.  So in 2012 Helen Davidson, Founding Director of the Kidzmix Program, will personally be conducting a number of 1 day workshops in Perth for parents, grandparents or any involved adult family member.

Based around Helen’s latest book “The 4th ‘R’- Relationships” As Important as Reading, Writing and Arithmetic the workshops explore the latest knowledge on social and emotional competence and introduces you to the 13 core skills that every parent can coach their child at home.
